Hello and welcome to my website! I'm Tim Coyne, and I am a professional trumpet player based in northeast Ohio. I perform regularly with a variety of bands, playing in all styles, including small jazz ensembles, big bands (lead, solo, and section chairs), Latin grooves, Broadway musicals, R&B, classical, and wedding/event bands. I also sing jazz standards and some classic R&B.
I've performed with national and international artists, many of NE Ohio's finest musicians, and some rising stars on the local scene. I also have several years of experience in teaching private lessons, plus experience working with high school band trumpet and brass sections.
My musical education has been an interesting jouney. I studied with Paul Everett when I was a music education major at Ball State University. I've been working to finish a music performance degree at Kent State University for the last few years, studying with Professor Michael Chunn. But I would have to say the bulk of my music education has occurred on and off the stages of Ohio, the midwest, and the rest of the United States.
There is much to being a musician besides actually playing, and I've been very fortunate to have learned much from my older and experienced musician friends as I was coming up. As I get older myself, I love being able to pass that knowledge on to others now as they are coming up.
Some of my main musical influences have been (in alphabetical order) Chet Baker, Randy Brecker, Clifford Brown, Miles Davis, Paul Desmond, Maynard Ferguson, Dizzy Gillespie, Freddie Hubbard, Wynton Marsalis, Lee Morgan, Charlie Parker, Sonny Rollins, Doc Severinsen, and Bobby Shew. I'm also routinely inspired by my peers around NE Ohio!
I'm a member of several local bands and lead the Tim Coyne Jazztet, but I also perform frequently as a freelance musician and sub with a few bands and for musicals. You'll find samples of my work and the jazztet on the Video & Audio page of this website.
My services include:
I've played many different horns over the years, but here is my current line-up.
Calicchio R37 Bb - My Calicchio is a heavier horn with a gorgeous sound, but will still light up in the upper register when needed. It's probably my favorite Bb I've ever owned.
Bach Stradivarius LR180-43G* Bb - My Strad is a lightweight, in raw brass, with a lightweight 43 gold brass bell I had installed in 2005. Purchased new in 1987, my freshman year in college, this horn just gets occasional use now.
Bach 229/7R C - I purchased this horn used in the summer of 2019, and it is the best C I've owned. The tone, intonation, and blow are terrific. It's the best C I've owned and already my favorite.
Yamaha 635ST flugelhorn - I've also had this since my freshman year in college, and it has a beautiful sound!
Getzen Eterna Bb cornet - I occasionally sub with the Brass Band of the Western Reserve, so having a decent cornet is a must, even if it doesn't get played very often.
As for mouthpieces, I've been playing the same three trumpet pieces for years - a Denis Wick MM4C, Schilke 14A4A, Callet Varicup 10, and Marcinkiewicz 14-S (for piccolo trumpet).
